DENTAL THERAPY TO OVERSHADOW DENTISTS IN 2009 AND BEYOND HR PLAN FOR HUMAN RESOURCES FOR HEALTH
Proposed Annual National
Production
DENTISTS
This doubling in production takes into
consideration the challenges faced by the public
health services needing the skills of this
profession.
Reduce to 120 by 2008 - DENTISTS PRODUCTION TO BE
REDUCED FROM 200 PER YR TO 120 PER YEAR
DENTAL THERAPISTS - FROM 25 PER YEAR TO 600
Increase to 600 by 2009
Dental therapists are critical to provision of
PHC (oral health). Current production levels must
be increased and training must occur at every
dental school.
Posts are available in adequate numbers but
career mobility must be improved in the public
health sector.

make demands that are REALISTIC "FROM 25 PER YEAR TO 600", currently the 25 that are qualified per year cannot find proper posts in the private or public sector, so where are the 600 that qualify going to be placed? our degree was introduced for a reason, and its either you are a therapist or you are a dentist, there is nothing in between. if you are not happy as a therapist, move on to dental surgery. agreed, therapists are discriminated against but that is only the result of a few rotten eggs in the profession that causes the entire basket to get thrown out, so those that do overstep their boundaries should be punished.but obviously its difficult to sift out the few since in private practice its the dentists themselves that train the therapists to do specialized work since we are seen as CHEAP LABOURERS. If they employed another dentist, they will have to split their profits. we understand Lesley that you are fighting for our profession but PLEASE, stick to realistic demands so maybe then they will be met. progress is made through development Ms Haripersad - whilst we progress we should develop - this should leave us in a position ahead not behind - in this world we live once - there are dental therapists that have cried on my shoulder telling me how they have been stifled for the last 35 years - these guys have grown old in a profession that has been despised by other dental professions - my time in this world as a dental therapist will be proudly lived as one who ensured that the profession moves on ahead - as a warrior and a scout of the profession of dental therapy - Who said that dentistry is owned by dentists - dont you understand that our very development is stifled by dental schools and deans that are dentists. Maybe - dental therapists should not sell themselves short and rise up as the guardians of basic dental care. the only demand I make is : EQUALITY AND FREEDOM FOR DENTAL THERAPY WE ARE A SOVERIGN PROFESSION BE PROUD OF WHO YOU ARE TAKE CARE Posted by lesley naidoo
