DENTAL THERAPY ASSOCIATION S O U T H A F R I C A INVITATION2008 ANNUAL PROVINCIAL AGM & CONFERENCE OF DENTHASA KZNJAIPUR PALACEDurban North You are hereby invited to attend the KZN & Eastern Cape agm & conference of Denthasa 2008. As you may be well aware, the reasons for your participation are underpinned by the harsh realities that our profession experiences. Congratulations on being part of a developing and progressive organisation. It is my express wish and that of the executive that each and every one of you contributes to the growth, expansion and development of DENTHASA. I would like to encourage you to participate in every meeting we have in order that we may move in unison and oneness toward our common objectives and goals planned for the future. The framework through which we operate must be recognised and understood whilst being implemented by the national executive and provincial leaders and facilitators, so that we would be able to move with agility in a time of distress and need. The days where the core executive made all decisions and led by means of autocracy is over a new day and time has dawned at DENTHASA where those in the actual sectors of the profession are now being activated to take ownership of the harsh realities and plan to resolve these issues, through the framework of our operations system (sectored approach) combined with a management by objectives style. Editorial news Message from the editor / president
Change is surely gaining momentum within DENTHASA. Our structures and leaders are beginning to realize their role in fulfilling organizational objectives. We are going through difficult macroeconomic times. Injustices and discrimination within the dental profession would certainly highlight these crises and many are beginning to realize that something urgent must be done to bring about freedoms and justice that the profession deserves. Dental therapists are becoming intolerant of the negative oppression and suppressive forces that undermine the profession. As the executive continues to strive in maintaining the organization, we are faced with many internal shortcomings, most of these stem from the most basic fundamental, you! Each dental therapist must bring their shoulders to the task and stand together in the struggle to gain our sovereignity in the dental profession. Many dental therapists have become complacent and some obliterated by professional wars with many casualties. Denthasa has heard your concerns and the unjust behavior of medical scheme administrators, benefit structures and professional discrimination in the work environment and is planning to take these issues to the next level. We require every practitioner to support our initiatives in protecting the profession from bias and discrimination. It is truly unbelievable that we face this colonial monster in our democracy. It is time to put an end to fee inequality, remuneration inequity and besiege of the profession by certain entities. I urge you to take an active role within the association by joining as a member, participating in all activities designed to empower you as a dental therapist and above all holding high the banner of the dental therapy profession with pride and dignity. Lesley Naidoo President News
HPCSA FEES
Denthasa has received a response from council regarding fees that we opposed earlier this year. The board has taken note of our concerns and has forwarded these to the general council for ratification. However to continue being registered we are all obliged to pay the amount due in full to remain registered practitioners. Ensure that your current postal details are updated with council.
SADA
Denthasa has met with SADA earlier this year in an attempt to unify the dental professions. We voiced our concerns with their role and position paper on our profession and requested a change in a bid to work together in the best interests of oral health for all.
Nothing to date has been forthcoming, however SADA had assured representatives that the matter would be tabled before their general AGM (March 2008). Denthasa holds to the principle that all dental professions must be respected and acknowledged for the role each provider plays in the greater context of oral health in our country. The stewards of the dental profession must begin the process to unify the various cadres of oral health and project an image of oneness. The current division and protectionism evident in the dental profession does not help meet the oral healthcare needs of the greater population.
Single Oral Health Journal
Denthasa had invited OHASA (oral Hygienists association) and DAASA (assistants) to form a single oral health journal with DENTHASA. However our fellow colleagues felt that they were doing well independently presently and were not amicable to unifying for the purposes of producing a single journal. Denthasa hopes that in the near future we would be able to create synergies with fellow colleagues and associations.
Public Service Forum
Mr. Madimetja Maponyane ndimex@yahoo.com (national head of public sector Denthasa) has formulated a public service dental therapy forum under the banner of Denthasa and is lobbying government and the department of health to improve the remuneration and career opportunities for dental therapists in the public service.

SP NET
Denthasa holds a 5% share of SP net as part of our endeavors in creating strategic partnerships with identified role-players in meeting the overall objectives of the association.
New Appointment
Mr Thabo Mmethi, our hard working and dedicated general secretary has resigned. Denthasa has recently appointed a new general secretary to fulfill this vital position in the organization. Denthasa welcomes a historically first, white executive member and new general secretary of the association Mr. John Le Roux john@novadental.co.za.
The executive has nominated and appointed the new general secretary at its last meeting in June 2008. This followed an unexpected resignation by our previous secretary, who is currently engaged in study commitments. John Le Roux is a practicing dental therapist and a dental technician; he also does technical work for Nova Dental. John brings with him resources and industry knowledge that would help Denthasa fulfill its objectives.
The national executive and leadership wish him well and hope that he would continue in the strength of our previous general secretary.
SAMDP
The South African Medical and Dental Association has invited DENTHASA to be part of their private company SGH ( SAMDP Group Holdings) that is a BEE enterprise with influence and shareholding in various medical and dental organs in SA and around the world. By partnering with the SAMDP, members of Denthasa would enjoy value added benefits such as start up capital for practices up to R 800 000.00, asset finance at preferential rates for personal or business development finance up to R 3, 5 million, medical scheme leveraging (tariff / code negotiating), contract / network negotiations, member services, research and development, business opportunities, professional representation at critical decision making environments that influences and impacts on the profession of dental therapy. It is believed that through strategic partnerships and associations, Denthasa would be able to take quantum leaps into the future and add value to all member dental therapists of Denthasa.
INDEMNITY COVER
According to new legislation, all health practitioners; independent, private and public service dental therapists self- employed or employed by another party would require by law professional indemnity cover.
Denthasa had approached DPL (dental protection limited) to directly provide this essential cover for all members however DPL continues to do business with SADA who receives a commission for every practitioner that joins DPL. Any South African dental therapist wanting DPL must go via SADA as they are the sole DPL designated facilitators for the dental profession in SA.
DENTHASA has sourced other reputable and competitive insurers providing identical cover. We have met with and negotiated cover for dental therapists for professional protection up to R5Million with a retrograde cover for the past three years at exceptionally competitive annual rates. These are underwritten by Lloyds of London and the executive is certain that members would be receiving valuable cover at competitive rates.
DENTHASA JOURNAL
The development of the journal has been a tremendous success for Denthasa. It is the epitome of our contribution to the dental fraternity. This however comes with a myriad of business and funding strains in making the journal a self sustainable endeavor. The total cost of the journal is borne by the publisher who derives income for the publications from advertisers. The dental market spends millions of rand in marketing and advertising; however there have been companies that explicitly avoid advertising or supporting our journal or our organization itself. These companies have intimate relationships with SADA and other associations and it appears that there may be negative influences that impact of marketing and professional support decision-making. Although I would like to gladly publish the names of these companies for your information, I would rather ask you to support those advertisers that support our profession. Should you find that a company that you loyally support refuses to participate in our professional activities, Denthasa requests that you notify your branch or our head of marketing and publicity : Millicent Shai

Address by The President of DENTASA
This year holds many promises for the profession of Dental Therapy in South Africa. The development, education and mobilization of the profession is the precedence in all our national activities. As part of steering an ailing association and redirecting efforts, energies, misconceptions and uncertainties is the express belief of every Dental Therapist to conceive hope and admiration in a profession that truly delivers first world preventative medicine in Dentistry.
The World Health Organisation has embraced the principles of primary healthcare and preventative medicine throughout the world. Human resources for health in developing and developed countries are re-evaluating their prescribed doctrines of health, training and development. South Africa is no stranger to the overwhelming health crises that plagues nations. Where tertiary and advanced forms of medicine has been the historical focus of nations across the world, with great emphases on curative based health service delivery, preventative medicine and prevention has produced results that are cost effective and have greater health outcomes.
As part of this magnanimous effort in the world, dentistry shares a small but significant part of the effort to boost prevention of diseases. The principle of prevention Prevention being better than Cure holds fast the fundamental belief that healthcare must concentrate on cause rather than effect.
The dubious reality in health is the vast disparity between public and private funded systems of healthcare. Both systems are indispensable components of service delivery in a multifarious society. The authentic reality however proves to prescribe various motives for healthcare and service delivery. One may find that the prominent feature of private healthcare is cost and moreover cost. In the public sector the bare essential form of care is afforded to society and efficiency takes precedence.
The cost factor of health is a bona fide and ever present nudge in every persons lives. Where public services focus on the optimisation of health budgets, the private sector would base most of their services on curative and costly outcomes where health expenditure relates to capitalistic profits. Although this may seem a crude statement in health it relates to evident claim patterns that many medical scheme administrators would declare.
In Dentistry for example, the cost of restoring a tooth that has been fractured or decayed by means of a direct filling is less than the cost of restoring the same tooth with a crown or prefabricated onlay. A dentist may choose to prescribe a crown and may clinically justify this treatment yet the cost factor is about 10 times more than a complex restoration. In the public sector a practitioner would do the most to cost effectively resolve the tooth problem, yet in the private sector a practitioner often decides to perform that treatment that is most profitable. The cost to educate and thereby prevent such an occurrence in dentistry is much more cost effective.
Managed health outcomes are increasingly pointing to preventative and minimal invasive forms of dentistry, such as provision of benefits for restorations and not covering specialised and advanced forms of dentistry. This again relates to focuses on preventative medicine and a shift away from curative, tertiary forms of healthcare.
Government must realise the value of Dental Therapy in South Africa both in the public and private sectors of dentistry. Dental Therapy undeniably fulfils the role of primary and secondary essential services in dentistry throughout the country cost effectively and efficiently and forms a 100% strategic fit with the basic minimum package of services in dentistry prescribed by the minister of health.
I would like to encourage every Dental Therapist to endeavour in the struggle to overcome political waves of doubt and despair poised by curative focused service providers and organisations that would obviate such opposition in the ultimate struggle between prevention and cure.
The South African Dental Therapy Association thus supports the South African government in its efforts to curb oral disease profiles amongst South Africans through prevention and primary healthcare.

CPD - CONTINUOUS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - TRAINING IS NOW MANDATORY FOR ALL DENTAL THERAPISTS IN SOUTH AFRICA - HPCSA. 1/1/2007
You are urged to participate in the following training program to equip yourself with the tools necessary to provide your patients with added value and technologically advanced procedures. For independent practitioners, this valuable course would provide you with greater opportunities to improve your treatment options available to your patients. Many Dentists have completed this training module and you are urged to attend to develop your clinical expertise in Dental Therapy. DENTHASA is currently planning various courses for Dental Therapist Development throughout the year make sure you attend, as all courses would credit you with mandatory CPD point requirements as per the HPCSA guidelines.
kindly contact our general secretary THABO - details above - NATIONAL TRAINING IS BEING PLANNED FOR EACH QUARTER OF THE YEAR - STAY ALERT STAY ABREAST OF RAPID DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROFESSION.
1. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
Fibre reinforced (strengthened) composites employ relative new technology in order to provide cost-effective, minimally invasive and patient-pleasing aesthetic dentistry. Worldwide, these techniques represent a growing field in dentistry.
These techniques were developed in Finland and introduced to South African dentists in 2004. Since then more than 750 dentists attended the Stick Bond hands-on courses.
During the 2006 DENTASA AGM a lecture on Fibre Reinforced Composites were presented; followed by a training session attended by 20 therapists. The training session was very popular and numerous requests for localized training sessions were made by the delegates at the AGM.
The dental therapist is seen as the first line in providing dental treatment for the general public. Continuing education is therefore critically important for the dental therapist in order to keep abreast in modern techniques, to the benefit of his/her patients.
This proposal not only aims at improving the capacity of the dental therapist, but also to empower the dental therapist in obtaining his/her full money-earning potential as well as providing a wider scope of services to his/her patients.
2. COURSE CONTENT AND PROJECTED OUTCOME
Course content:
1. Introduction: what is fibre reinforcement, how did it develop, different types of fibres, applications in dentistry, indications and contra-indications
2. Splinting: clinical cases illustrating step-by-step techniques, demonstration, practical
3. Direct bridges: clinical cases illustrating step-by-step techniques, patient selection, design principles, demonstration, practical
4. Other uses: posts, reinforcing huge composite restorations, direct veneers
5. How to claim from the medical aids
6. Closure and handing out of certificates
Projected outcome: After completing the training session, the delegate will be able:
1. To splint the teeth of a periodontal compromised patient
2. To design and construct a direct bridge using different methods to manufacture the pontic(s)
3. To reinforce huge composite restorations employing different techniques
4. To select patients suitable for placing fibre reinforced composites
5. To understand the basis on how to claim these techniques from the medical aids
The struggle for development of the profession continues, by your commitment to the association and your education and clinical improvement, Dental Therapy would inevitably take its rightful place in the Dental Fraternity in South Africa.
DENTASA plans to launch a quarterly journal this year kindly join the membership and show your support for the profession.
Approximately 65 dental therapists have completed the fibre reinforced training module and have recieved CPD accreditiation - The association is busy putting together the relevant tariff codes for procedural claims from schemes.
DENTASA is also planning further educational modules relating to other areas of dentistry for 2007.
Here are some pics of the recent courses held :
